The Underground Railroad | Variety FYC Piece
This project was a series of three “For Your Consideration” videos I created with Andrei Haq and Hank Strong of ModOp for our clients Variety and Amazon. I helped create the overall story structure in conjunction with Andrei, as well as edited, colored, and worked with our motion graphics team to create the look of the three pieces. The three pieces ended up winning Best of Branded Content Winner for Q2 2021 in the Arts & Entertainment Topic category.
Our clients at Amazon Prime and Variety wanted our pieces to play up the fantastical elements of “The Underground Railroad.” The adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller tells the saga of Cora, a runaway slave, and her dogged pursuer, bounty hunter Arnold Ridgeway, through a blend of uncompromising realism and fantastical imagery.
We worked closely with director-showrunner Barry Jenkins to ensure these pieces stayed within his creative vision for the series. We conducted Zoom interviews with members of the cast and crew, cut together with clips from the show and behind the scenes imagery to tell the audience the story of how this harrowing show was created.
There were three final pieces delivered to Amazon and Variety, with social cuts of each as well. The main piece tells the story of how Barry Jenkins wanted to honor his ancestors with the making of this series. The second piece focused on the incredible acting of Thuso Mbedu and how this role helped her with her own personal trauma. The third piece covered the incredibly talented cast and how their own roles all revolved around Cora’s journey to freedom.
